There’s a camera on a pole near your house that already knows your car better than most of your neighbors do.
It doesn’t just catch you driving by. It reads your plate, timestamps it, tags which direction you were headed. And mostly, it files the whole thing into a database that police departments across the country can search without ever getting a warrant.
Nobody asked your permission for any of this, and there’s a good chance you don’t even know the camera is there.
Anyone Could Already Be Watching You
What I’m about to tell you will keep you up at night. In December 2025, a YouTuber named Benn Jordan cracked open dozens of these cameras with nothing but a search engine, because they weren’t protected by a password or any encryption at all. He brought in researcher Jon Gaines and the count climbed to nearly seventy cameras streaming live, plus thirty-one days of stored footage anyone online could scroll through. People were watching kids on playgrounds and neighbors who had no clue a camera was pointed at them, and anyone who found those feeds could save whatever they wanted.
When I read about this, I started thinking of my neighbor Richard, and the night he saved my family. I’d always refused to put a security camera on my own house, worried about my family’s privacy, right up until two intruders broke in while we slept. I woke up tied on the kitchen floor, watching one of them tear through our rooms while my wife was held nearby and our kids cried in the basement.

- In Mountain View, California, more than 250 agencies that had never signed a data-sharing agreement ran about 600,000 unauthorized searches on the city’s camera data in a single year – among them the ATF, the U.S. Air Force, and a federal inspector general’s office
- Customs and Border Protection has been granted access to over 80,000 Flock cameras, and critics say the system now functions as a rolling record of nearly everyone’s movements.
- An officer in one city can pull search results from cameras clear across the country through that same shared network… and there’s nothing you can do about it.
Nobody voted on this, and nobody got a public hearing where they could say no – it just spread, camera by camera, county by county, until an entire country was wired for tracking without anyone deciding that’s what should happen. China built the same kind of grid on purpose, with a government that openly admits it wants to watch its own people. We’re building it here too, past 100,000 cameras now, except we’re calling it a safety partnership instead of what it actually is.
Why Covering Your Plate Will Not Save You
Search this topic online, and you’ll find plenty of people selling plate covers, sprays, and reflective films that supposedly blind these cameras. But between you and me, none of it is worth your money or the risk.
Obscuring or altering a license plate is illegal in nearly every state, and it draws exactly the kind of attention you’re trying to avoid in the first place.
Most of these products barely work against modern high-resolution cameras anyway, since the system also reads the make, model, and color of your vehicle, not just the plate. Hence, a plate that’s obviously been tampered with is far more likely to get you pulled over than one the camera simply failed to catch clearly.
Mapping the Cameras Is Legal
Volunteers have built crowdsourced maps tracking where these cameras are actually installed, block by block, so drivers can see exactly which routes are logged and which aren’t.
Checking one of these maps before a sensitive route, a moving day, a doctor’s visit you’d rather keep private, or seeing someone you don’t want tied to your name, is no different than checking for speed traps before a road trip.
You Can Push Back On The Cameras Themselves
You don’t have to just accept these cameras staying up forever. Dozens of cities and counties have already canceled or rejected Flock contracts after residents showed up to public meetings and asked hard questions about who has access to the footage and why.
Over eighty contracts have been terminated across more than two dozen states since 2021, once local officials couldn’t get straight answers about how the data was being handled.
Here’s what actually moves the needle if you want cameras removed or restricted in your own area:
- You can find out when your city council or county commission meets and show up specifically when Flock or ALPR contracts are on the agenda, since most people never do and a handful of persistent residents can shift the whole vote.
- You can file a public records request for your city’s data-sharing list, which forces officials to disclose exactly which outside agencies have access to your local footage.
- You can ask your council directly how long footage is retained, who can search it without a warrant, and whether the list of accessing agencies has ever been audited, since most contracts get approved without anyone asking those questions the first time.
- You can connect with local groups already tracking this, like your state’s ACLU chapter or the volunteers behind the DeFlock mapping project, who often already have the research done and can tell you if your specific contract is up for renewal soon.
- You can push for a sunset clause on any new contract, meaning the deal automatically expires and comes back for public review instead of renewing quietly year after year.
The Secret to Cut Your Exposure
You can’t erase yourself from a system this size, but you can shrink how much of your life ends up inside it.
- Vary your regular routes instead of driving the same streets every day at the same time.
- Park a few blocks from sensitive destinations instead of directly in front.
- Pay cash for anything you don’t want tied back to a plate-linked timestamp.
- Use a bike, rideshare, or public transit for the errands that matter most to keep private.
- Avoid toll roads and transponders on trips you’re trying to keep off the grid, since those systems log you the same way.
None of it makes you invisible, but together it makes you a far less interesting record sitting inside a database built to notice patterns.
