The Brief:

A property dispute in Lehigh Acres, Florida, escalated when Eddie Jordan II attacked a resident with a pickaxe. After being knocked to the ground, the resident shot Jordan in the leg in self-defense. Following a secondary dispute days later, law enforcement officers arrested Jordan near a local convenience store.

Jordan was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Investigators ruled the residentโ€™s use of force justified under Florida self-defense laws, as the resident faced an imminent, potentially fatal threat while pinned on the ground beneath an armed assailant.

LEHIGH ACRES, FL โ€” A confrontation over property boundaries along Lake Avenue turned life-threatening when an argument escalated into an assault with an agricultural tool. Just after 8:30 p.m. on Monday night, deputies with the Lee County Sheriffโ€™s Office responded to emergency dispatches reporting a shooting on the property.

Upon arrival, uniform deputies discovered Eddie Jordan II suffering from a non-fatal gunshot wound to his right shin. The Violent Crimes Unit immediately launched a probe into the physical evidence and the circumstances surrounding the ballistic discharge.

The Ambush and the Ground Defense

Investigators determined that the resident had ordered Jordan to leave the premises. Instead of complying, Jordan picked up a pickaxe, followed the victim, and forcefully shoved the heavy tool into his back, knocking him face-first onto the ground.

Jordan then stepped forward, standing over the fallen resident with the tool raised and threatening an immediate strike.

Facing an imminent, potentially fatal impact while pinned on the ground, the resident drew a concealed firearm and discharged a defensive round. The bullet struck Jordan in the lower leg, shattering his forward posture and terminating the assault on the spot.

The Second Encounter and Arrest

Initially, both Jordan and the victim declined to pursue formal criminal complaints on Monday night. However, the volatile dynamic did not dissipate. On Wednesday, LCSO deputies were dispatched back to the same Lake Avenue address following another confrontation involving the two men.

Recognizing an ongoing danger, the victim informed detectives that he wished to pursue full prosecution for the pickaxe attack.

Second Precinct deputies initiated proactive sweeps and tracked Jordan on Thursday morning to the area surrounding a Circle K convenience store on Homestead Road North. He was taken into custody without further incident and booked into the Lee County Jail, charged with Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon.

Detectives and command staff officially ruled the homeownerโ€™s gunfire a justified deployment of lethal force under Florida law.

The Law: Floridaโ€™s Stand Your Ground Standard & Ground Defense

This incident provides a clear legal illustration of Florida Statute ยง 776.012 (Use of Force in Defense of Person):

  • Deadly Weapon Threshold: An object not traditionally considered a weaponโ€”such as a pickaxe, hammer, or crowbarโ€”is legally categorized as a deadly weapon when used in a manner likely to cause death or severe bodily injury.
  • Disparity of Position: The resident was physically knocked to the ground, placed in a severely disadvantaged posture, and had an assailant standing directly over him. Under Florida law, a defender is not required to attempt a physical scramble or retreat while an attacker possesses the high ground with a deadly weapon.
  • Proportionality: The resident utilized lethal force to neutralize the threat while actively facing severe injury or death.

Safety Tip: Shooting from a compromised or supine (grounded) position requires specific tactical awareness. If knocked to the ground by an attacker who is standing over you, your immediate physical goal is to orient your feet toward the threat and create a defensive barrier with your legs. When drawing and firing from the ground, maintain absolute awareness of your lower extremities; never point your muzzle across your own knees, feet, or torso while acquiring your sight picture. Firing at low targets or upward angles can also result in bullet skips off hard surfaces, making immediate shot placement into center mass critical.
