KISSIMMEE, FL (2-minute read) — A heated altercation over a fast-food order turned tragic Wednesday night in Osceola County, Florida, when a Checkers employee allegedly shot and killed a customer. The restaurant, located near a popular tourist destination, became the scene of chaos as gunfire rang out, sending bystanders fleeing in panic.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the arrest of 23-year-old Elijah Mackey on Thursday. He now faces a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of 36-year-old Wesley Robertson. According to authorities, the confrontation began with an argument about a food order, but quickly escalated. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots before the area was locked down by law enforcement.

Those working nearby described the terrifying moment they heard shots and quickly evacuated. “Everything shut down. People were running—no one knew what was happening,” said a neighboring employee.

Robertson was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Mackey remains in custody at the Osceola County Jail.

As communities grapple with how to prevent future incidents, this shooting serves as a stark reminder of the importance of conflict de-escalation and good law-abiding citizens being armed.

Safety Tip: Always de-escalate verbal confrontations in public. Carrying a firearm comes with the responsibility to avoid unnecessary conflict, especially in emotional or crowded situations.
