Two firefighters in Idaho were shot and killed after responding to a deliberately set brush fire. The suspected gunman was later found dead on Canfield Mountain with a firearm nearby.

COEUR D’ALENE, ID (2-minute read) — A tragic and disturbing incident unfolded in northern Idaho when two firefighters were fatally shot while responding to a suspicious brush fire near Canfield Mountain. According to local and federal authorities, the gunman used a high-powered rifle and lay in wait, ambushing emergency responders shortly after they arrived on the scene.

The situation quickly escalated into a high-risk law enforcement operation, with officers from multiple agencies—including the FBI and local SWAT teams—rushing to secure the area. Officials initially reported uncertainty about how many suspects were involved or how many victims may still be unaccounted for. Given the complexity of the mountainous terrain and heavy smoke from the fire, helicopters equipped with thermal imaging technology were deployed to search for the shooter.

Hours later, members of a SWAT unit discovered a deceased male on the mountain. A firearm was located nearby, and law enforcement believes he is the shooter responsible for the deadly ambush. His identity has not yet been released, and investigators are working to determine his motive.

Chilling audio from the first call detailing the horrible situation was broadcast and recorded, and can be heard below. It’s tough to listen to, and discretion is advised.

The “shelter in place” order that had kept local residents confined to their homes for several tense hours was lifted after the suspect’s body was found. However, emergency management officials cautioned that the wildfire remains active and advised the public to stay alert in case conditions deteriorate or evacuation orders are reissued.

Increased Risks for First Responders Amid Civil Unrest and Violence

This tragedy sheds light on the growing risks first responders face, not only from natural hazards like fire, but also from targeted violence. Firefighters are increasingly responding to dangerous and unpredictable situations, especially in remote areas where backup may be delayed.

For those in the concealed carry and self-defense community, this incident serves as a sobering reminder that threats can emerge even in roles focused on saving lives.

Safety Tip: Always be aware of your environment, especially in isolated or rural locations. If you carry concealed, stay trained and mentally prepared to defend yourself.
