A man in Redmond, WA, legally carrying a concealed firearm, shot a suspect who attempted to steal his vehicle and then became aggressive. The suspect is recovering, and the employee is cooperating with investigators.

REDMOND, WA (2-minute read) — Police in Redmond are investigating a late-night shooting that took place Sunday near the QFC on Redmond Way. According to the Redmond Police Department, officers were dispatched around 11 p.m. following a report of a disturbance involving a firearm.

Authorities say an employee of a nearby business noticed a man trying to steal his car. The employee, who is legally permitted to carry a concealed firearm, confronted the suspect. During the confrontation, the suspect reportedly turned aggressive and advanced toward the employee. In response, the employee drew his firearm and fired one round, striking the suspect in the abdomen.

The employee told officers he acted in self-defense, fearing for his safety. No other injuries were reported, and no additional shots were fired during the incident. The suspect was transported to Harborview Medical Center and is currently receiving treatment.

Redmond PD confirmed the shooter remained on scene and is fully cooperating with detectives. Investigators continue to gather evidence and statements to determine if any charges will be filed.

Self-Defense and the Law in Washington State

Washington is a “stand your ground” state, which means individuals are not required to retreat if they are in a place they have a legal right to be and are acting in self-defense. However, lawful use of force still requires that the person reasonably believes they are facing an imminent threat of serious bodily harm or death.
