Training with your carry gun doesn’t always mean blowing through a pile of ammo at the range. Dry fire practice is a proven method, but what if you could make it more engaging and scenario-based? That’s where virtual reality is starting to play a role. Aimpoint’s GAIM VR system lets shooters run drills, practice target transitions, and even walk through competition stages — all from the comfort of home.

What Is GAIM?

GAIM integrates with the Meta Quest VR headset and comes in several configurations, from rifle stocks to pistol platforms. The handgun trainer—an inert Arex Delta II equipped with swappable backstraps and a dedicated fire control unit—syncs seamlessly with the Quest system.

The app itself is tailored to the firearm you’re using, allowing shooters to select between an Arex, Walther, or Glock model, some with Aimpoint ACRO red dots or iron sights. Users can then run pre-set drills, jump into IPSC-style stages, or even build custom ranges complete with barricades and multiple target setups.

GAIM describes it as:

“Immerse yourself in scenarios that replicate real-world environments, whether you’re a passionate hunter, dedicated sport shooter, or a professional in law enforcement or the military.”

Practical Applications

For the Gear Bunker reviewer, GAIM proved most valuable for practicing target transitions, testing different sighting systems, and rehearsing custom courses that could later be replicated live on the range.

The system isn’t meant to replace actual range time—but it does help bridge the gap between dry fire and live fire. Think of it as a simplified version of the U.S. Army’s Engagement Skills Trainer, scaled down for home use.

The app even includes an IPSC course for shooters who want to walk through competition scenarios, either solo or in a “hot seat” rotation with friends.

GAIM Handgun Trainer Specs

  • Platform: Arex Delta II replica (inert)
  • Included: GAIM Training Handgun, Quest 2 holder, trigger option
  • Dimensions: 7.28” L × 1.06” W × 5.47” H
  • Weight: 0.58 lbs (handgun) | 0.79 lbs (with holder & trigger)
  • Compatibility: Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, Meta Pro
  • MSRP: $330

Final Thoughts

GAIM isn’t a substitute for recoil management or the feel of live fire—but as a dry fire supplement it provides a more engaging, scenario-driven training option than just snapping in on a wall. The ability to practice with virtual barricades, run competition walk-throughs, and train with both iron sights and a simulated red dot gives shooters flexibility they won’t find in standard dry fire.

As the Gear Bunker review concluded:

“If you are interested in supplementing your firearms training, consider GAIM to see if it is a helpful tool for you.”
