USPS Gun Shipping Rule Sparks Backlash From GOA

The U.S. Postal Service is attempting to skirt the recent ruling striking down the USPS’s nearly century-old ban on shipping firearms through the mail, and one major gun-rights group is calling attention to the matter.

In a national alert to members, Gun Owners of America (GOA) sounded the alarm on the USPS plot to circumvent the ruling and maintain the status quo on mailing guns.

“We need your immediate action to stop the U.S. Postal Service from sidestepping our landmark court victory and chipping away at your Second Amendment rights,” GOA Senior Vice President Erich Pratt wrote in the alert. “We at Gun Owners of America recently scored a major win in court, forcing the USPS to overturn its nearly 100-year-old, unconstitutional ban on mailing handguns. But now, instead of simply following the law, the Postal Service is trying to pull a fast one.”

According to GOA, the USPS is proposing a new rule that creates loopholes and an arbitrary category of “unmailable” firearms, silently undermining gun owners’ rights and GOA’s court victory. Incredibly, their new “solution” would still ban millions of legally owned firearms from the mail, ignoring both the DOJ’s order and the Constitution.

“And get this… ammunition is still banned, even though FedEx and UPS have no problem shipping it safely,” Pratt continued. “It’s outrageous.”

Pratt said the bottom line is that the Postal Service is trying to dodge the law, violate the Second Amendment, and ignore the court’s ruling. Now it’s up to gun owners to make their voices heard on the matter.

“But there’s one thing they can’t ignore: your voice,” he wrote. “Right now, the USPS is required by law to accept public comments on their proposed rule…and they must read each and every comment you submit. We’ve seen before how a tidal wave of grassroots comments from gun owners can crush anti-gun policies. We did it with the Obama administration’s green-tip ammo ban. We can do it again, but time is running out.”

GOA has made available a “Submit Comment” button so that members and other gun owners can quickly and easily send the government their thoughts on the mailing ban.

The letter states: “I appreciate the Postal Service’s effort to review its firearm regulations in light of the Second Amendment. However, as written, the Proposed Rule falls short and should be revised.”

It concludes: “In short, while this proposal is a step in the right direction, it does not fully respect the Second Amendment or provide a clear, consistent, and workable framework. I urge USPS to revisit the rule, conduct its own constitutional analysis, and adopt policies that truly align with the rights of law-abiding Americans.”

Ultimately, Pratt said, time is short for putting a stop to the USPS fiasco.

“Don’t wait, don’t assume someone else will do it,” he concluded. “Just a few minutes of your time can make all the difference. Every comment puts pressure on the government to obey the law and respect your rights. If we flood their inboxes, they cannot ignore us. This is how we win—again.”
