The Brief:

A licensed concealed-carry holder defended himself during an attempted armed robbery at an Orland Park, Illinois gas station. A masked assailant approached the customer pumping fuel and drew a handgun. The customer responded by drawing his own weapon and firing at least two defensive shots.

The wounded suspect dropped his firearm and fled before being apprehended nearby by police and hospitalized. The customer was uninjured and cooperated fully with law enforcement, who confirmed the customer held a valid license and acted in accordance with Illinois self-defense laws.

ORLAND PARK, IL โ€” A routine morning fuel stop turned into a high-stakes defensive encounter along a busy suburban retail corridor. At approximately 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, officers with the Orland Park Police Department were dispatched to the intersection of Harlem Avenue and 151st Street following reports of gunfire during an attempted armed robbery.

The incident took place at a local, family-owned service station and was documented from multiple angles by the facilityโ€™s closed-circuit surveillance network.

The Approach and the Defensive Draw

Surveillance video reviewed by investigators shows a customer standing beside his vehicle routinely pumping fuel.Without warning, a masked individual walked across the lot, calmly approached the customer, and drew what appeared to be a handgun.

Naseem Elmosa, whose family owns and operates the station, reviewed the security recordings and described the immediate escalation. โ€œHe was masked. It was clear on plain view sight that this person, he was armed, of course,โ€ Elmosa said.

Rather than freezing or capitulating to the lethal threat, the customer reacted with split-second speed. Reaching behind his back, the citizen drew a handgun concealed in his waistband and discharged at least two defensive shots.

The camera captured the armed assailant dropping his gun to the pavement as the defensive rounds were fired. Secondary exterior footage showed the wounded suspect limping away across the property on foot.

Suspect Apprehended, Citizen Cleared

Orland Park Police units flooded the surrounding blocks and quickly located the wounded suspect hiding a short distance away. Paramedics treated the suspect at the scene before transporting him to a regional hospital for medical management.

Authorities confirmed that the customer who fired the defensive rounds holds a valid Illinois Concealed-Carry License (CCL).The citizen was completely uninjured during the exchange and remained on scene, cooperating fully with arriving detectives.

โ€œItโ€™s just crazy to see here in Orland Park. Itโ€™s just scary for everybody around here, especially having a family-owned business. Never came across this issue before,โ€ Elmosa added, noting relief that the customer possessed the training and tools necessary to protect himself.

The Law: Illinois Self-Defense Standards at the Pump

Under Illinois law (720 ILCS 5/7-1), the use of force likely to cause death or great bodily harm is justified only when an individual reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to themselves or another, or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony.

  • Forcible Felony Rule: Armed robbery is explicitly classified as a forcible felony under Illinois statute. The display of a handgun accompanied by a demand for property establishes an immediate, objective threat of severe injury or death.
  • No Duty to Retreat in Public: Under the Illinois Firearm Concealed Carry Act (430 ILCS 66), a lawful licensee is carrying in a permissible public accommodation (such as a commercial gas station exterior) and is not required to turn their back or attempt a retreat while staring down the barrel of an assailantโ€™s firearm.
  • Proportionality and Immediate Cessation: The customer ceased fire the moment the attacker dropped his weapon and broke contact, demonstrating proper defensive restraint under review by the Cook County judicial network.

Safety Tip: Pumping gas is one of the most common everyday tasks where drivers become completely vulnerable to transitional ambushes. Drivers frequently look down at the pump screen, stare at cellphones, or step between their open car door and the fuel port, effectively cutting off their peripheral vision and escape routes. When fueling, always keep your back to the vehicle so your visual field scans 180 degrees outward across the parking lot. If you must carry in a 4 oโ€™clock or appendix position, practice drawing while clearing your outer garments with one hand, as the space between fuel pumps and parked vehicles often limits your mobility.
