SPOKANE, WA (1-minute read) — Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Detectives are actively investigating a shooting incident involving a vehicle theft suspect and the armed owner of the stolen vehicle. The suspect remains hospitalized with possible life-threatening gunshot wounds, while the vehicle owner has been interviewed and released.

On December 13, 2024, at approximately 8:40 PM, deputies responded to a report of a Jeep stolen from a residence near W. Charles Road and N. Dover Road. The vehicle owner, an adult male, armed himself and pursued the theft suspect in another vehicle. Shortly after, gunshots were reported in the area of W. Four Mound Road, east of N. Landt Farms Lane.

According to initial reports, the Jeep owner fired at the suspect, who later abandoned the stolen vehicle in a ditch, leaving behind evidence of a gunshot wound. The suspect fled on foot and approached a nearby residence while bleeding, where law enforcement apprehended him. Deputies provided medical assistance before transporting the suspect to a hospital, where he remains in serious but stable condition.

While it is understandable to feel anger or frustration during a theft, it is critical not to pursue a suspect or use deadly force unless lives are in immediate danger. Chasing suspects can escalate an already dangerous situation, putting both the individual and others at risk. Firing at a fleeing suspect, especially when they no longer pose a direct threat, can result in serious legal consequences, including criminal charges. It is always best to contact law enforcement and allow trained professionals to handle the situation.

The Jeep owner, though detained initially, was later released after being interviewed by detectives. Authorities processed multiple scenes, seized a handgun and two vehicles, and interviewed witnesses.

This ongoing investigation highlights the risks of pursuing suspects independently. Legal experts emphasize that while individuals have the right to defend themselves, firearm use must align with self-defense laws, particularly when deadly force is involved.

Safety Tip: Before taking action during a theft, assess the situation carefully and contact law enforcement immediately. Pursuing suspects can escalate into dangerous and legally complicated encounters.
