SHELLEY, ID (2-minute read) — An attempted ATV theft late Monday night in Shelley, Idaho, escalated into a violent encounter that left one man dead and a homeowner recovering from a gunshot wound.

Around 11:00 p.m. on August 19, deputies from the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the area of 1100 E. and 1300 N. after reports of gunfire. According to authorities, a homeowner confronted an individual attempting to steal a 4-wheeler from their property. During the confrontation, both the homeowner and the suspect were shot. The suspect then fled on foot.

Responding deputies quickly called for backup. Officers from Shelley and Blackfoot Police Departments, the Idaho State Police, and the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office assisted in securing the area. Emergency medical personnel arrived soon after and transported the homeowner to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls. Officials say the homeowner’s injuries were not life-threatening.

Ongoing Investigation and Use of Deadly Force

With the suspect believed to be armed and injured, law enforcement set up a perimeter and began a thorough search. Deputies from both Bingham and Bonneville Counties found the suspect hiding in a nearby field. During this second confrontation, shots were fired by deputies from both agencies. Although life-saving measures were immediately attempted, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

As of now, authorities have not released the identity of the suspect or the homeowner.

While this case remains under active investigation, it serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a property crime can escalate into a dangerous and deadly encounter.

Safety Tip: While protecting property is important, your safety should come first. Ensure your firearm is accessible but securely stored, and know your state’s self-defense laws before acting.
