Mossberg just dropped two new versions of their iconic 590 pump shotgun. The new 590R and 590RM 12-gauge shotguns aren’t just updates with new stocks or barrel lengths though, these bring something truly new to the platform. The R stands for Rotary, as in the addition of an AR-style Rotary Safety Selector.
Mossberg Rotary Safety Shotguns
The tang mounted safety on the Mossberg 500 and 590 series was and is a great design. It doesn’t require you to break your firing grip to engage or disengage it, its intuitive in the push forward to fire release. It also works just as well for right or left handers. It woks great with a conventional shotgun stock. Where it falls shror is when you add any sort of stock with a pistol grip to your 500 or 590 platform. Once you do that, you lose all of the benefit of the tang mounted safety. Well, the new 590R and 590RM Rotary Safety Shotguns fix that.
The new rotary safety selector is ambidextrous and has a protective guard that can be reached without breaking grip. It works in line, collapsible or folding stocks, and will be familiar to anyone used to an AR or similar platform. That’s not all that’s new on the R models though. They also have a redesigned user-serviceable forend and an integrated barrel/single heat shield. Four models will be available, including two standard offerings and two mag-fed versions.
While they do have some important updates, they also keep the things that have made the 590 a time-proven, reliable platform. They still use nonbinding twin action bars, a positive steel-to-steel lock-up and anti-jam elevator, dual extractors, aluminum receivers and they have drilled and tapped receivers. Thee tube fed models also have a convenient clean-out magazine tube with cap for ease of maintenance.
The Mossberg 590R (50762/50761)
The 590R is a tube-fed model chambered for 12-gauge, 3-inch shells. It has an 18.5-inch barrel with an integrated heat shield and new compact forend. Magazine capacity is 6+1 rounds. Mossberg equipped the 590Rs with a 5-position adjustable stock with an interchangeable recoil pad along with a Magpul MOE pistol grip. They come with a receiver mounted Picatinny rail, a flat profile trigger, as well as the new rotary safety selector. SKU 50762 comes with Magpul MBUS 3 adjustable sights with a mini top rail for front sight attachment and an AccuChoke compatible barrel (Cylinder choke tube included). SKU 50761 comes with an 18.5-inch stand-off, cylinder bore barrel. MSRP is $1,085 for either model.
The Mossberg 590RM (50213/50218)
The 590RM models are magazine fed and chambered for 2.75-inch 12-gauge shells. Both models have an 18.5-inch barrel with integrated heat shield, compact forend, 5-position adjustable stock with interchangeable recoil pad and MOE pistol grip. They have a Picatinny rail, flat profile trigger, rotary safety selector and come with a 10-round magazine.
Mossbert offers 5, 10, 15 and 20-round capacity magazines. SKU 50213 includes Magpul MBUS 3 adjustable sights with a mini top rail for front sight attachment and an AccuChoke compatible barrel. SKU 50218 is equipped with an 18.5-inch stand-off, cylinder bore barrel. MSRP is $1,190.
