HUMBLE, TX (2-minute read) — A quick-thinking woman in Humble, Texas, fought off a suspected carjacker using a knife in a dramatic confrontation that ended with the suspect crashing the vehicle and fleeing the scene on foot.
According to Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman, the incident unfolded Monday at a gas station on Kenswick Drive. The woman was putting air in her tires when she noticed a man, later identified as Shadrach Iyere, climbing into her vehicle. As she approached and demanded that he get out, Iyere began driving away—with her still clinging to the driver’s side door handle.
Woman Uses Knife to Stop Texas Carjacking Attempt
The victim tried to stop the theft, but Iyere reportedly punched her multiple times in the face during the chaos. The vehicle crashed into a brick wall shortly afterward, but the woman still held on. In a desperate attempt to regain control of the situation, she offered him money, prompting Iyere to hand her back her purse.
That’s when the woman pulled out a knife to defend herself. Officials say the display of the blade was enough to scare off the suspect, who fled on foot. Deputies quickly located and arrested Iyere nearby. He has since been charged with aggravated robbery and is being held on a $20,000 bond.
This incident highlights the critical importance of situational awareness and the potential value of self-defense tools—even something as simple as a pocketknife. While a firearm is a more common choice for personal defense, edged tools can also play a key role in stopping an imminent threat when used responsibly.
Safety Tip: If you carry any self-defense tool, whether it’s a knife or a firearm, ensure you’re trained in how to use it under pressure. Also, always remain aware of your surroundings, especially in public spaces like gas stations or parking lots.
